Los Angeles – Longtime labor leader Maria Elena Durazo endorsed Antonio Villaraigosa for Governor of California today – saying, “Thousands of families are better off because Antonio heard them, stood with them and acted on their behalf.”
Durazo, who is the past president of UNITE HERE Local 11 and has also served in prominent national union leadership, said: “Antonio Villaraigosa has been my friend for decades. He has always fought on the side of the poor. Beyond understanding what Cesar Chavez fought for, Antonio has acted.
“Thousands of families are better off because Antonio heard them, stood with them and acted on their behalf.
“If I am fortunate enough to win my campaign for the State Senate, Antonio will be a true partner in the Governor’s Office. We will not allow our communities, our people, to be left out, left behind, pitied or ignored. We aren’t going to ask for what’s right; we are going to fight for it.
“I know that Antonio and I will do great things for millions of Californians.”
Villaraigosa said: “I am proud to have marched, struggled and worked with Maria Elena for decades for a common purpose – making sure that people who work so hard for the California Dream can earn dignity, security and respect. We share more than a background in the farmworker’s struggle and the labor movement. We share a common goal, to make sure that California is still a land of opportunity.”
Villaraigosa said: “We have millions of Californians working harder than ever before, but too many are falling behind. We need a governor who will work hard making sure our economy works for everyone.”
Durazo joins the United Farm Workers, Congresswoman Karen Bass, Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters, Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, Southern California Teamsters Joint Council 42 and thousands of other elected and community leaders in support of Villaraigosa for Governor.
