My parents, Antonio y Cristina, did all that could for each of their four children to excel in our schooling.

They made sure that we all attended nursery school, which prepared us well for what was to come. But most importantly, they showed their commitment to our education when my mother read to us every night before bedtime, and our father, after working his second job, would come home and make sure our homework was done.

When we each attained middle school status, we moved from doing homework at the kitchen table to having our own desk. Admittedly it was a rickety aluminum old thing placed in the corner of our shared bedroom, but it was ours to use for studying and reading.

As a retired university professor, I appreciate Antonio’s commitment to education. He knows how important early education is for kiddos and he knows the importance of parent involvement. He’ll make a great governor.
